Ethical Principles for Finnish Sports and Physical Activities
in a nutshell


GENERAL PRINCIPLES

1. Respect for other people and life

One should treat another person as one wishes him/herself to be treated by others.

“All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.”
United Nations, Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948, article 1.

2. Promotion of health and wellbeing

Sports and physical activities promote physical, mental and social wellbeing.

3. Responsibility for education

For children and youth sports and physical activities are an important part of growing up.

4. Openness, democracy, honesty and fairness

Fair Play is the foundation for all sports and physical activities.

5. Everyone’s equal right to sports and physical activities

Sports and physical activities promote and realise broad-based equality.

6. Sustainable development and respect for nature

Sports and physical activities promote sustainable development as well as carry out environmental education and increase environmentally responsible behaviour.

COMPLEMENTARY PRINCIPLES

7. Multicultural sports and tolerance

Sports and physical activities promote tolerance and cross-cultural understanding as well as prevent racism.

8. Anti-doping

Doping does not belong to sports and physical activities.

9. Responsible use of drugs and medicine

Sports and physical activities are not associated with the use of tobacco, snuff, alcohol, narcotics or other drugs or the misuse of medical substances.

10. Non-violence

Sport culture is against violence. It aims at activities in which physical or mental violence does not occur.

11. Prevention of sexual harassment

Sport organisations do not accept sexual harassment or abuse.

12. Public safety and comfort

The public, supporters, officers, collaboration partners and media representatives feel comfortable and safe in sport events.

13. Responsible economy

Sports and physical activities are managed in economically sustainable ways.


Fair Play is sports organisations’ common description of good sports and physical activities.

The Ethical Principles of Fair Play were adopted at the Finnish Sports Federation’s General Assembly the 20th of November 2004.

Fair Play is intended to live on sport fields and jogging paths, in sport halls, locker rooms, meetings, lobby discussions, letters, events and work places.
